Choosing a mold removal contractor isn’t as easy as you think. There is no set of rules for certifications on this kind of profession so you must be extra careful when choosing one. However, there are things that you can keep in mind so you can avoid falling in the hands of wrong people or those that are only pretending to be a mold removal contractor. Whether you found them thru internet search or thru a referral, the following things should be taken into consideration:

1. Experience
This should be your foremost criterion when choosing a mold removal contractor. It’s a good sign if the company you are eyeing is in this business for so long. It could indicate that they’ve been doing the job pretty well.

Search about the company. A great mold removal contractor has a good working knowledge on their field and offers prompt and efficient service.

2. Services
It’s important to ask the contractor the scope of their service. Will they replace the drywall and other mold-infested materials or do you have to contact other contractors to do such task? Also, you need to ask whether they conduct their own mold inspection or do you have to have a separate contractor for this? Asking these questions beforehand will prevent any conflict from arising.

You should also see to it that the company is continually updating themselves not just on mold removal methods but as well on the ordinances, regulations, and codes on this certain field.

3. Specialization
If your house is infested by mold due to one common reason, then it would be best to get in touch with a contractor who specializes in a certain type of mold removal. There are companies out there who specialize on removing mold due to moisture, mold concentrated in an HVAC unit, and many more.

4. Professionalism
A mold removal contractor should present themselves professionally. They should be professional both in appearance and demeanor.

5. Insurance
To prevent any case of liability while the contractor works in your house, you have to make sure that the mold removal contractor is properly insured.

These things are just among the most important things that you have to consider. Other points that you need to address are the free estimates, specific timeframes, and any guarantees put into writing.

Water Damage and Mold Remediation Services

Water damage services will come in and assess the damage, fill out a water damage services quote and give you an estimate of how much the damage restoration will cost. Usually after determining the scope of the water damage they will begin by removing any puddled or standing water, removing furniture, carpeting and any other wet items. They will then bring in a series of fans to help with air circulation helping the place dry faster. Following this they will do a series of mold tests based on how long the water damaged property has had water in it. This will then be followed by an anti fungal treatment. If the water damage was so severe that the drywall needs to be removed they will often apply an anti fungal/mold treatment to the exposed structure.

If the water damage to your home or business (be sure to seek out a company that has experience with commerical mold services versus ones that specialize in residential mold remediation services)was caused by the fire department while putting out a fire some service providers will recommend a fire damage restoration treatment that will include removing the fire and water damaged materials followed by applying a special paint sealer that traps in the smoke smell, otherwise on days when there is a lot of moisture in the air you will still be able to detect a faint smoke smell.

There are different factors that will determine what your contractor will do, but if they are experienced and certified you will rest assured that they have your health and safety in mind.

These kits can be found in most DIY stores, such as Lowes and Home Depot, and their prices can range from $10 to $100. None of these home test kits will tell you the level of infestation you might have, all they will do is tell you the types of mold that are inside the building you are testing and eventually hiring a mold removal company.

These kits are either in the form of a stick, or contain a Petri dish, to which a medium is added that is known to attract mold spores, and where they will grow quickly. The Petri dish method is preferable. The stick or Petri dish is then sent to a laboratory after a few days for analysis and the results can be obtained within ten days to two weeks.

If there is visible mold growth and you want to test to see if the mold is toxic, the mold can simply be swabbed and submitted to a lab immediately. If you suspect there is mold growth within an air conditioning system, including systems in a vehicle, you can use one of these kits for that purpose and this can take as little as 48 hours.

Some of these home kits allow you to simply run a piece of tape across an area you think may be infected, and that can be sent to the lab for analysis. The more you pay for a home test kit, generally the more comprehensive the tests will be.

The agar, which is the mixture used in the Petri dish, will start picking up the mold spores immediately, but be aware that different molds grow at different rates, and one mold can actually destroy another.

If the results are shown to contain any toxic molds, including the most notorious, Black Mold, the lab will tell you. If there are only minor trace amounts of mold, or the results are inconclusive and you still feel that you might have a mold problem, then a professional should be consulted.

Depending on the size of the building or home you wish to test, a professional will charge anywhere between $200 and $1000 for a comprehensive mold test. It is a small price to pay if your home or building is making people ill. The symptoms may only be minor, but if not treated promptly and correctly, the infestation will only get worse and Black Mold is known to cause heart problems, fibromyalgia, serious lung problems and even cancer.

With that being said I would not recommend very many off the shelf Citrus based cleaners, unless they specify directly that they control and remove mold and mold spores.

Some people make a homemade potion of citrus oils and hydrogen peroxide to remove small amounts of surface mold, mainly in their bathroom shower area. The citrus oils emit a pleasant smell and at least for the time being remove the mold that people can see. Overall, this treatment is a great way to remove very small amounts of mold.

As a long term solution I would recommend using a Clorox based cleaner and if that proves ineffective a Borax powder based laundry solution paste works best.  Borate is a highly effective fungicide that is highly recommended for removal of small quantities of mold.

Remember depending on the surface some items cannot be salvaged once contaminated with mold.  Drywall and cellulose insulation should be removed and replaced with fresh material after the source of the moisture has been found and fixed.  You cannot “wash off” mold from drywall.

If you house has larger contamination areas or you are not comfortable doing the mold removal yourself you should have a professional come in who is experienced with mold removal to run a series of tests and give a quote on cleanup costs.
