How Can I Remove Mold From A Tie?

Below is a question we received about mold removal from a reader, while I cannot answer every question hopefully by selecting and answering some common ones it helps others.

Hi Charles,

We had a leak in our house after a significant hail storm, one of our dressers was right under the leak, my husbands ties received the bulk of the water.  Unfortunately we did not notice right away and the tie collection started growing black mold.  Can I simply wash the ties or do I have to throw them away.

I am reading conflicting information on the internet and was hoping you could help point me in the right direction, thankfully our mold problem is fairly minor but still very annoying.

Please help!

My Answer:

Hi Ann,

Washing the tie collection with standard laundry detergent usually will not take care of all the musty smells or the mold spores, even though to the ties may appear clean there is a chance the mold could come back.  How can you be sure to get rid of the mold?  Find a detergent that has borax or borates in it.  This will work like standard detergent but will kill the mold.

This is great because ties are expensive and it would be a shame to throw them away and have to buy new ones.  If you (or any other readers) have further questions please feel free to post in the comment section below.  I am glad I can help answer some questions and alleviate your fears about mold removal.
